  • Greetings!

Welcome to The Work/Life Monitor, featuring cutting-edge business innovations, insights from visionary thinkers, and jewels of inspiration to make Work/Life integration a more positive journey.

This month we travel to Puerto Rico for the Alliance for a New Humanity Conference. You'll hear from Andres Botran, a Guatemalan politician and businessman who helps the poor of his country earn a dignified living. Phillip Hellmich of the Search for Common Ground espouses the benefits of common language when discussing spirituality in the workplace. And HearthStone Homes CEO John Smith, is the subject of the Work/Life Minute as he talks about making conscious decisions in the boardroom.

I wish everyone the peace, joy and due diligence needed to stick to those 2007 intentions. I'm offering some new tools to help you along in your process.

First, my blog is now on-line. It's called The Chaos Monitor and offers a dose of insight and inspiration from the news headlines. Second, I invite you to check out my new CD - PRACTICAL CHAOS: Reflections on Resilience which was released in December. You'll find a link at the end of the newsletter for more information.

Here's to being Human! All my Best, Judy

Alliance for a New Humanity: Faces of Courage

In the spirit of co-creating a new paradigm to raise social awareness and consciousness, about 400 people came to Puerto Rico from across the globe to share their wisdom and insights on the direction of humanity. The event was produced by the Mythic Imagination Institute which set the stage for an enlightening climate of interaction.

Change agents; individuals and organizations striving to create a more peaceful and equitable society, discussed the projects currently inspiring an evolving culture of personal and social transformation. Among the attendees was Guatemalan Minister, Andres Boutran. In the following interview, he shares how he utilizes his business to directly support the poor in his country, by providing a dignified way to earn a living.

"Consciousizing" the process of making business decisions

This month’s Work/Life Minute features HearthStone Homes CEO, John Smith. The company is a leading builder of residential homes. About 10 years ago Mr. Smith began a new journey of self exploration. The life-change impacted his business. He says he wanted to "consciousize" his company by encouraging employees to do business guided by core values, based on qualities like integrity, courage and nurturance among colleagues.

The Lexicon of Spirituality in the Workplace

Creating a common language to discuss spirituality in the workplace. Phillip Hellmich of Search for Common Ground says that's one of the methods used for conflict resolution both within his own organization and in the work his group does world-wide. It's one of the reasons the organization was chosen to be honored at the International Spirit at Work Conference Awards in Garrison, New York. Phillip is seen here to the left with ASAW Founder Judy Neal and Futurist John Renesch.

Guidance from PRACTICAL CHAOS: A Reporters Notebook on the Exquisite Nature of Resilience
    A Lesson in Detachment

In beginning a new year many of us, myself included, likely made a list of resolutions, targeted accomplishments, or things (ie. unhealthy relationships) that needed to be tossed. While these lofty ideas seem perfectly harmless, eventually these items might manifest in our minds as elusive goals. That's when those aspirations get put on a back burner. We might feel bad about not reaching the pinnacle or tipping point that drives us toward completion. But that's really OK. It's OK not to be perfect. We are so tough on ourselves in the short term, instead of staying open to the wealth of positive potential in the long term. Being attached to the outcome, or our perception of what success is, can ultimately take us from the journey of life. Remember that the good, the bad and the ugly - all equally offer constructive lessons.

It's in the surrender to the process, that success manifests. It doesn't mean you don't have to work hard. But instead of beating yourself up, remind yourself that the day-to-day awareness of your thoughts, actions and deeds can bring you closer to those resolutions. The yardstick for success then becomes the jewels of wisdom from the daily journey. I urge you to be kind to yourself. Rome wasn't built in a day!
