Welcome to The Chaos Monitor, Every month we'll feature the latest news on cutting-edge business innovations, insights from visionary thinkers, and jewels of inspiration to make Work/Life integration a more positive journey of exploration. October is National Work and Family Month. So it’s a good time to reflect upon where we are as authentic beings trying to thrive in a 24/7 global marketplace. We are living in a time of great transformation - in an era of instant information. As a broadcast journalist, I’ve seen my share of chaos. But I’ve also experienced the exquisite resilience that we as human beings inherently possess. We recover, adapt, and move forward with a new positive vision and attitude. Embracing chaos and the challenges we face head-on, sets the stage for unprecedented sweeping change. We are not merely working people; we are human beings at work - and in business. This newsletter is a place to share new ideas on Work/Life integration, to explore what's working with the people and businesses already employing such techniques, and to ignite a passion to create the conditions for positive change. I welcome your ideas and input. I also invite you to join me at some of the upcoming lectures and workshops I'm offering. I'll be in NYC and Florida this month. You can get more information at www.judymartinspeaks.com. Here's to being Human! All my Best, Judy
This month’s Work/Life Minute features an actor who's become accustom to working and living on the edge. Linus Roache played the fated Dr. Thomas Wayne in Batman Begins. While the role of Batman’s father had it own challenges, perhaps his current role as a by-the-book FBI agent on the NBC nighttime drama Kidnapped, pushes his buttons in a different way. He’s playing a character who has many sides and is full of surprises. Being an actor is a thrill for Linus Roache who says he loves his work. But while he puts everything he has into his craft, he doesn't take his character or work home with him. Find out what Linus does to stay centered in this month’s Work/Life Minute. And head to The Chaos Monitor page on www.judymartinspeaks.com to hear the full interview with Linus.
They clash with more traditional, rule-bound colleagues. They are frustrated with business systems that favor profit over the creative impulse. Author Judi Neal calls them Edgewalkers, and they might just be in the office next door. In her new book: Edgewalkers: People and Organizations That Take Risks, Build Bridges, and Break New Ground, this former manager at defense contractor Honeywell, takes on the task of defining a new emerging cultural group within corporate America that breaks the traditional mold. Neal, a Professor Emeritus in the management department at the University of New Haven, says in this rapidly changing, diverse global marketplace, there’s a need to employ such Edgewalkers to stay competitive. Her book features interviews and practical tools for the reader to manage their own Edgewalking skills toward being creative while keeping an eye on the profit margin.
Perception is everything. What do you see? The sun breaking through the clouds or a cloudy day keeping the sun at bay? When you wake up every morning there’s invariably a theme that starts your day, and creates the mindset for the way you will react or respond through out your day. What was your intention when you began your day today? Did you set an intention? Your perception of the way the day dawns is crucial for setting the tone for your waking hours. Did the alarm wake you, a neighbors car starting, your children? Regardless of the little bursts of chaos as you start your day, despite the morning rush for coffee or just getting to work, take a moment. You can’t control the annoyances that might alter a calm start to the day, but you can shift your core perception with an intention. If you can take just a few minutes in the morning, you can give yourself a real gift. Perhaps just take 3 minutes as a respite for a contemplative exercise. Give thought to this - what is the highest purpose for this particular day? Is it to jumpstart a project at work and avoid procrastination? Perhaps it’s as simple as not reacting to a colleague at work. Whether you reflect for a few minutes, do a quick breathing exercise or just sit and contemplate a peaceful start to the day, you CAN trigger a different perception and set a more positive tone. Awareness of your daily perceptions and intentions is a simple way to break patterns that often get in the way of progress. It's a practical formula to cultivate the calm at the beginning of your day.
