  • Greetings!

This month we're giving you tools to boost your workplace or business profile - and make your worklife experience easier to navigate in jittery times - while cultivating resilience. The ride has begun as we tackle the wave of recession talk nipping at our heels, the fallout from the sub-prime crunch and the dicey job numbers.

January saw job creation fall by 17,000 - the largest monthly dip in four years. The financial sector and real estate industry might take the brunt of the slash and burn scenario, but that tone trickles down to us all in the workplace or in business. It feeds concern and often prevents us from getting the worklife fit we need to be productive without burning out.

First, in breaking news, a story I just reported for NPR's Morning Edition on WorkLife Flexibility in corporate America. Then it's on to EnergyRICH® Coach Heather Dominick for the WorkLife Minute. My fabulous sister Mary Martin Ph.D, writer extraordinaire, shares her tips for boosting your profile by writing an ebook in the Innovative Integrator segment. Then some Practical Chaos® Tips for Turning up the Heat in Your Career.

We're all in this together, keep the faith!

    All my Best,
    Judy

    WorkLife Flexibility on NPR

With the convergence of the Gen X, Gen Y and Baby boomer generations in the workplace, companies are taking a harder look at worklife flexibility. In the past, it might have been incorporated as more of a "perk," rather than a strategy. But that is changing.

According to the Alliance for Work Life Progress , more than 83% of companies offer some sort of worklife flex. But even big businesses implementing such initiatives, experience challenges. Worklife strategist, Cali Yost, author of "Work+Life: Finding the Fit That's Right for You", nails the key issue facing corporate America saying that, "You can't have flexibility in an inherently inflexible environment." That means a worklife program that involves the voices of company brass - and rank and file.

I just completed a story on this topic which aired on NPR's Morning Edition. It examines flexibility in the workplace. Check it out by clicking on the title below. I'll be writing more on this topic in the days ahead, especially as it relates to the job market.

Job Security in Jittery Times: Turning up the Heat on Your Career

A gander at the news and you'd think the sky was falling. Talk of recession, a stimulus package, an additional anticipated interest rate cut, housing crunch woes - you get the idea? Underlying fear about the economy hits consumer confidence, but it also has economists and career counselors poised to pontificate on the condition of the job market.

The rate of unemployment is a lagging economic indicator. It's less a predictor of what's to come - but rather an indicator of what is already in play. That means a continually rising unemployment rate might be indicative of an already weakening economy.

So where does that leave the average Joe who might be thinking about their job security? It might have workers running for their cubicles or their bosses office to get some "face time" and demonstrate their loyalty. The worklife balance that so many of us have been striving for might be threatened in the muddy waters of recession because of the perception that more "face time" = "higher productivity."

n the scores of interviews I have done on this topic it's been consistently revealed that job programs with less "face time" - more often than not deliver just as much, if not more productivity from its employees.
