Seven years ago our lives changed, triggering chaos in our living and working experience. But we emerged resilient. As a reporter working for Marketplace Morning Report airing on NPR, 9/11 was a profound wake-up call for me personally. The value of human capital took on an entirely new meaning as I worked by day as a reporter - and by night volunteering with the children impacted by the events of 9/11. This issue is dedicated to the lessons that emerged from that time: A passionate need to do work that is better aligned with our core values (we don't know what tomorrow will bring), the importance of cultivating resilience even when there is no chaos (hardly ever), and the deep heartfelt desire to make a conscious contribution to the world (the bigger picture - "not about me"). As part of this reflection and awareness of this sensitive time of the year, I'm offering a complimentary download from my Practical Chaos: Reflections on Resilience CD for a short time. It's called the Breath of Awareness. This month in Breaking News, you'll find links to my recent NPR story on "Encore Careers" regarding the re-wiring of boomer careers toward passion and profit. In the Work/Life Minute: the Flexible and Changing Workplace. In the Work/Life Nation Radio Feature: I speak with Professor and Career Counselor Rick Jarow Ph.D. on the definition of Right Livelihood. This month at East/West Books in New York City, I'm participating in a panel discussion with Matthew Fox, author of The Reinvention of Work. (Also check out the World Shift to Peace Festival) In his book he states, "Work is indeed our way of creating our deepest contribution to the community, it lies in that which we birth." So what is your life's work - and are you living your deepest desire in your vocation? Food for thought on this sacred day. Here's to being Human,
Encore Careers on NPR Traditional retirement seems pass these
days. Especially to baby boomers still
trying to shore up their nest egg. Still, a
recent survey suggests a good majority of
them might be choosing the work they do -
more with their hearts - instead of their
financial prowess. There's a new class of
boomers who are rewiring their work life in
order to give back while making a buck. Personal Branding: Talking Points This month you can find a twist on my general view of talking points on two influential websites. On WomensEducationCenter.com which offers numerous first-rate articles for women running their own businesses or in corporate America. For you authors out there, I have more on talking points at HelpMeWithMyBook.com which is hosted by Kim Weiss Publishing Services. Kim has 20 years of experience in both the publishing industry and PR with an incredible expanse of knowledge. She is the Communications Director for HCI Books in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Click here to listen to a podcast with Kim. Evolutionary Leaders California Retreat: Tackling Social Change Across the Globe The Source of Synergy Foundation, Chopra Center and the Association for Global New Thought co-convened a retreat for leading thinkers in evolutionary consciousness. In silence and discussions the likes of Deepak Chopra, Jean Houston and Mariianne Williamson debated everything: the environment, sustainability, media, business, the workplace, healthcare, politics, education. The Work/Life Monitor Blog will soon announce breaking news resulting from this retreat.
The Changing Workplace Have changes in your work schedule or environment led to more stress for you? Listen to this WorkLife Minute for tips on how to cope with the changes.
Rick Jarrow on Creating the Work You Love When you rise from your morning stupor, is the first thought on your mind the delight of the day ahead at work - or the demise of your human experience in business? It's a question that Vassar History professor and career counselor Rick Jarow tackles daily. He's the author of Creating the Work You Love and has been a mentor of mine for years.
Harvard University: Valuing WorkLife Change and Risk Placing a value on right livelihood is nearly impossible. It's not practical, most would say, to pick up and switch careers toward more meaningful work. It can be chaotic. But sometimes it's in taking such risks -- out of our comfort zone -- that we reap extraordinary and unprecedented rewards. Such was the message at Harvard University this past weekend.
